GEO stands for generative engine optimization: making your website easy for AI answer engines to find, understand, trust, and cite. Where classic SEO aims to rank in a list of blue links, GEO aims to be part of the answer that tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot generate for a user.
Why GEO matters now
More people are asking an assistant a question instead of scanning a page of search results. When the assistant answers, it often summarizes a handful of sources and links to them. If your content is not discoverable or extractable by those engines, you are invisible to that audience, no matter how well you rank in traditional search.
GEO vs SEO: the difference
They overlap, but the emphasis is different:
- SEO optimizes to rank a page in search results. The user still clicks through.
- GEO optimizes to be quoted and cited inside an AI-generated answer. The user may never click, so being the trusted, extractable source is the win.
Good SEO helps GEO (both need crawlable, structured, authoritative content), but GEO adds a sharper focus on machine-readability, structured data, entity clarity, and being genuinely quotable. See our companion guide, how to show up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.
What AI answer engines look for
- Crawler access. AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and ClaudeBot must be allowed in your robots.txt.
- Server-rendered content. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your key text only appears after JS runs, they may see an empty page.
- Clear structure. Descriptive headings, short answer-style paragraphs, bullet lists, and tables are far easier to extract and quote than walls of text.
- Structured data. Organization, Article, and FAQPage schema help engines identify your brand and pull facts with confidence.
- An llms.txt file. A curated, LLM-readable map of your key pages. See what is llms.txt.
- Entity signals. Consistent brand name, an about page, and sameAs links to your official profiles help engines disambiguate and trust you.
- Authority. Citations and mentions from other credible sites still count.
How to improve your GEO
A practical starting checklist:
- Allow the major AI crawlers in robots.txt.
- Make sure your important content is in the raw HTML (server-rendered).
- Add Organization and FAQPage structured data.
- Publish an llms.txt with links to your most important pages.
- Rewrite key pages as clear questions and concise answers.
- Keep facts specific, accurate, and dated.
GEO is not a replacement for SEO; it is the next layer on top of it. The foundations, being crawlable, fast, structured, and authoritative, serve both.
